The Strong Family Mission Statement

Do you ever feel like, as a mom, that you are just spinning your wheels? Just surviving? You spend your days fixing meals, feeding everyone, and driving kids from one activity to the next. Your schedule is cram packed with seemingly good things, but you still aren’t living and parenting intentionally? I know I have! If we are longing to build a lasting heritage of faith, we must know where we are going and how to get there. A family mission statement can help us do that.

One of the greatest tools we can have in our parenting arsenal to help us in this chaotic world is a family mission statement. It’s like a compass guiding us to our true north. I hope to convince you of the importance of having a family mission statement and help you learn how to write your own.

What is a family mission statement?

A family mission statement is a precise statement that gives direction and clarity to your purpose as a family. It is like a road map that tells you HOW and WHY you do what you do. It can help us keep our focus when we are making decisions. Many businesses use mission statements to communicate to both their employees and consumers their goals and ideas. It gets everyone on the same page and lets their customers know what they should expect from them. Our families aren’t businesses, but there are many reasons to use a family mission statement to guide our families in the same way.

Why should you have a family mission statement?

A good family mission statement gives guidelines. It guides your family to discover their purpose within a biblical framework. It helps us to understand how to live our daily lives with intentionality and our purpose in mind. When your mission statement is rooted in the Word of God it breathes life into our homes and our families. It can give our children a clear path to follow and roots to keep them grounded in their faith. It helps our family keep God’s glory and honor in the forefront of our minds, and teaches us to be guided by the Holy Spirit.

How to use your family mission statement?

Our family mission statement hangs on a chalk board (pictured above) on the wall in the entry way of our home. It hangs there to remind us daily where our focus should be. We discuss the points around the dinner table and in our family devotion times. We apply our mission statement when decisions need to be made, and when we inevitably sin against one another. Psalm 119: 105 says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” We have strategically rooted each point of our mission statement in scripture so that our actions and decisions would always be guided by God’s Word.

With our compasses in hand we can guide our families to build a faith that will outlast us.
